Time in an area which I know quite a bit About so you and I we’ve been doing Online marketing for about 10 11 years Each now and we’ve done a lot of guest Post saying we’ve worked with clients We’ve built our own sites we’ve had Penalties before we’ve worked around Them we’ve built good links with built Bad links we know you know there are Certainly people that know more than us But we know a fair amount about what’s Going on about the landscape of search Engine optimization and I read I woke up This morning I actually read saw in bed You know sir mark turn off my alarm Check Facebook of course and there’s a Bunt the algorithm as fat has given it To me shown it to me first and there’s This article from search engine journal And the title of the article is Google Penalties on guest post articles okay so Okay the assumption one would would make About that by the way I wanna I want to Be clear in our courses we advocate People do guest posting right so that What we’re also clear on like our Position so far yeah yeah so so Essentially what happened was some one Site gone unnatural outbound links Warning that’s a manual action from Google that individual made some Assumptions about what was going on they Posted these assumptions on a Facebook Group which is SEO signals lab this

Group there’s a screen shots of their Webmaster tools and screenshot of the of The actual notice I’ll read out for you In a second Search engine journal someone at search Engine journals saw that and wrote an Article about it that article perhaps Misunderstood slash slightly distorted Intentionally or unintentionally What was going on quite significantly And we’ll get into the specifics of this In a minute but when you actually look At it it’s quite hilarious A lot of people obviously shared that Article it’s quite sensationalized kind Of it’s quite uh it’s just like Clickbait yes let’s just say that It’s like it’s angled in no way it’s in A good way that appeals to people’s Fears you know because a lot of people Use guest posting and so a lot of people Pay attention to a headline like these Here’s okay here’s what I’m gonna do Here’s the h2s from the article I’m Gonna read them at you The first one is outbound link mmm-hmm Outbound link penalty second one is Guest post manual action from Google the Third one is is Google going after guest Posts or paid guest posts question mark The third one no official statement from Google the fourth one should you Continue accepting guest posts question Mark so yeah pretty much mandatory

Scheme you know yeah for any Inflammatory anyway this article comes Out a bunch of people share it a bunch Of people will post it on a group on via People will sit in our our Facebook Groups many others as well people will See on their profiles on Twitter and They’ll often put a little comment Around it like it’s yeah it’s guest Posting dad or what does this mean or What’s going on here help what do I do Should I still accept guest posts yeah I Was like oh my god y’all dated you sir That is and then a lot of people who Didn’t actually read the article will Then comment with the assumption about What the articles about often missing The point and even the people in this Case who did read the article they’re Still reading essentially misinformation And they’re basing this with their Headlines often you know they’re basing Their comment I mean the read the whole Article is based on like misinformation We’ll get into that in the second suits To why that is so you have a lot of People commenting on various levels of The incorrect kind of sequence of events That the followed and commentary that Followed and then people commenting on Those comments and basically that’s why I said this is a sheer show Because it is and this all occurred Because there’s a lack of critical sense

By a few key individuals in this chain And and certainly a lot of people Further down the chain who you know Probably through no fault of their own Because you you see an article on search Engine journal which is supposedly a Fairly reputable certain site SEO realm Although that’s the debate as well to Have I mean that’s like I know I don’t Want honestly like I don’t read a search Engine journal and it’s like if you’re That guy says you like about from like The occasional news maybe you might be Interested but like like the rest of the Comments free surface level and I know For a fact people like settings on the Site like it’s like you know it’s been Filtrated you know we’ll get into the Motivations that different parties might Have later in this this episode to give You a bit of context to that as well And one thing I will say is there are Genuinely a lot of beginners newbies People who maybe haven’t seen Sensationalized stories such as this Before reacting to it with with a lot of Fear with a lot of doubt with a lot of Kind of concern really about what to do Should they keep guest posting should They keep accepting guest posting guest Posts on their site rather and yeah I Want to kind of address peel all the Layers of the story back and get back to The root of what actually happened here

Post He’s like yeah charge for this post so They were essentially do fall paintings Yeah and then I was like oh how do you Think Google found his site and this he Didn’t really know but he says he Doesn’t promote guest posting on his Site and the link was a branded encoder Brendan cotext in relevant content I Don’t know what the site is so I can’t Really judge it myself that’s that’s Just the answer I got here I don’t know I was asking like how his traffic went And he actually said his traffic is up 30% week on week right now so it doesn’t Seem like his site’s traffic went down For all metals and purposes is only the People who link to who he links to that Are not getting as much of a boost in Their rankings not really he said being Affected in terms of traffic that would Make sense because this is this is not An inbound link penalty this is an Outbound link penalty meaning I know but Like the question should you still check Except guest post becomes kind of Irrelevant at this point well I want it I want to wind the clock back even Further how do we know this is not a Guest posting yeah exactly I mean I Think the thing is like guest posting is Such a white ton I mean I don’t call a Guest posting I call it guest posting When you paid right I’ll call it paid

Links so and I know some how do we know It’s about these specific links like how Do we know here if you read the because He posted a screenshot of the message From Google I’m gonna read it out to you Now the subject is unnatural outbound Links from and then his site is blurred Violate google webmaster guidelines – Webmaster of domain google has detected A pattern of links from your site to Other sites that is either unnatural or Irrelevant This pattern attempts to artificially Boost other sites rankings in Google Search results such unnatural rankings Would cause search results to show Preference for results not relevant to The users actual query it also violates Google webmaster guidelines therefore we Are discounting the trust in links on Your site the manual this manual action Has been applied to domain comm so to Fix this Remove the unnatural links on your site And file a reconsideration request after We determined that after we determined That you have complied with our Guidelines we will remove this manual Action here’s how to fix this problem Identify unnatural links on your site Look for links that were added to your Site in exchange for some type of Compensation like money goods services Or reciprocal links to remove the user

Or remove or use nofollow on these links The nofollow attribute allows you to Tell Google not to crawl a specific link 3 submit a reconsideration request ok Where does it mention guest posting yeah Yeah fine enough so I guess I guess he Assumed that it is guest posting so when I talk to him actually one thing I Didn’t mention he basically told me it’s An affiliate site that hasn’t been doing Very well with the latest updates and as A result he was trying to monetize in Other ways by selling selling posts on His site or like selling links on these Sites basically ok ok but just back up a Second there so what we what is right Out there was no mention of guest Posting no so here is the post of this Individual made on SEO signals lab Initially amory asked you Google started A campaign against sites that are Accepting guest post articles ok one of My sites have been hit by the manual Penalty and the message basically says And then he puts quotation marks but He’s paraphrasing here so he’s kind of Putting together a message which he Thinks Google is essentially saying here It’s here it says we have detected that Some of your articles are guest posts Dada we have disabled your authority For your outbound links please set your Outbound links to nofollow and submit a Review request okay right if if you

Compare that to what I just ran out Before what the actual message said There’s quite some difference in there Yeah yeah next important this is still Him him talking important facts here my Site has no mention that we accept guest Posts anywhere all guest posts were Using informative content and branded Anchor the site only posted 15 guest Posts in the last four months and all Guest posts have been mixed with other Content of ours the penalty doesn’t Affect our site trip traffic and then it Goes on to talk about it’s Google Targeting guest posting guest posting in General is that one of the strategies Our guest posts all going to become Nofollow in future a bit of kind of well It’s scare mongering and all this right Yeah I mean it’s like except I’m not Sure if I should say that but like I’m Friends with you on facebook now that we Took them a lot of his timeline it’s Quite similar okay So we have here a situation where this Person’s received this notice from Google which has no mention of guest Posting he’s made an assumption that It’s specifically about guest posting And he’s basically put that in the post So that’s one thing what happened next Is that search engine journal someone a Search engine journal read that the Author of the post is Roger Maharaja

Monty yeah so Roger wrote what this Individual said said and where this Individual has paraphrased so remember That the quotation marks I said just a Second ago so what he wrote not what Google wrote the author of the search Engine journal article thought that that Was a quote from Google they thought That Google has said that so they wrote This article under the assumption that That was a copy-paste quote what Google Said and they the second age to is a Read out before guest post manual action From Google initially they wrote the Following they were The publisher reported that the manual Action email said And then that paraphrase which I said so This is what’s going through the mind of The person who wrote this this article When he wrote wrote it what happened This morning was particularly Interesting Glen Alsop aka Viper chill Who runs the SEO blueprint he noticed This and he noticed hey there’s a Discrepancy here this isn’t what Google Said this is what the guy was Paraphrasing so Glen wrote to Roger and Said hey this is you’ve you’ve made a Mistake here this is a paraphrase so Upon clearer information remember that The original that the person that has Happened to said that the message Basically says and then in quotation

Marks Crean shot of what his own Interpretations there’s zero doubt Whatsoever that this person is Paraphrasing here right and when that Was pointing it pointed out to the Author of this article Roger Monty instead of saying this is Paraphrase he wrote possibly a Paraphrase which to me is like just one Of the most disingenuous things because I may possibly do because you’ve written An article with a slant fair enough You based an assumption which you had You had made when you’ve been proven That that’s not the case or you know You’ve obviously made a mistake and Anyone can objectively see that from the From the post and SEO signals lab rather Than change the article delete the Article rewrite the article you add this Possibly a paraphrase but as if that Kind of gets you off the hook or makes What what’s what’s happened here okay And it’s just it’s absolutely ridiculous That I mean the editorial standards here Are a truly low yeah yeah yeah I mean it Making mistakes is okay I think it’s Like we’ve made mistakes in the past Right there this case is where we drop Reviews on services and we say things That actually were proven to not be true Yeah and and also like for example Materials I talked about this in his Interview and you know we do what we can

To Try and fix it in the best way possible Matt you spend $50,000 in advertising The post that he fixed after so that he Could like essentially make it right in Terms of information and for us same Like we put like massive disclaimers Like we were drunk on this article and We’ve left them to this date on these Articles were wrong so I think being Wrong is okay it’s more about how you React to being wrong and that’s kind of The problem here especially when a lot Of people just don’t read that stuff and Like they just read the headlines and it Just spreads like wildfire and then we Go on our Facebook group before our Guests puts out that I don’t know what To do running around like headless Chickens not knowing what to do and and It’s a it’s under it’s under author of The article like for not for not fixing It to be honest and and and it’s it’s Just making the industry wars in my Opinion this this one so far that SEO Roundtable today reached out to Google To say are you is there a campaign of I Said no you’re targeting guest posting And so they they not have an article Today google confirms no recent campaign Against unnatural link John What’s-his-name Mira Gary you know Gary Uh yeah I was in uh he was in the valley When you gotta actually yeah yeah so he

Said it’s not the case and it’s funny as Well like a lot of um like more black Hat people pbn people etc came out on Twitter as well so like Cyrus tripod Tweeted that and they’re like that’s Kind of weird that you guys you I had a Co guys just discovered that Google’s Been doing this for like five years or Something and like we’ve been receiving Now now PB ends and stuff like that so It’s not doesn’t seem to be that new Actually doesn’t it to be like that Exciting etc is just maybe it’s been Extended maybe and and the thing as well Is that this message says it’s a manual Action right so I don’t think is the Cause of an algorithm or something that Is this gets being spotted it’s been Reported whatever it is how Google found Out just the guy at the respond teams Like oh like this guy’s selling links Boom just like apply this and then the Links don’t really apply and to be Honest it’s quite nice from Google to Not kill his search traffic In the past they would probably have Destroyed his sash I think as well I Like the index it completely for pure Spam or something so I think I think It’s actually Google is becoming less Hard if anything like if you’re saying And the funny part is it’s maybe throw a Better way of targeting people who are Acquiring these links the people who are

Been yes because because they don’t know About it you know if your exact site Gets a manual action I was gonna say is All your traffic you sure as hell know About it right but if you if the site’s You’re getting links from or buying Links from or whatever have to get them Are having these penalties then you’re You’re unaware that they’re not having Any effect from you which begs the Question if you’re buying links from a Big link seller how many of them are Actually doing any good or not how do You even measure that I don’t link as Possible that’s how people were saying On Twitter there was a joke as well that False probably has 10,000 of them Because like so many things have been Sold on Forbes etc but like it’s quite Interesting to see that but like yeah it Means that probably a lot of sites do Have that although I did talk to some Anonymous link sellers and they say that You know sighs they work whose hadn’t Been affected no like no single one of Them etc that being said if you’re a Site that’s had this penalty and Someone’s buying links from you would You volunteer voluntarily tell them that You’ve had this because exact ruins you The marketability of you selling links Just FYI to clarify anyone who’s Watching this for the first time we Don’t advocate selling links we don’t

Around hosting guest posts linking out To other people you know as I mentioned Before a lot of people in comments You’re saying oh sure I just know follow All my links and this kind of thing or Should I build guestbook should I Actively try and build guest posts which Are only nofollow is that safer right a Lot of confusion and this kind of stems Out of the fact that there are numerous Bad actors at play here so there are People who get guest posts on a site and Then instead of making high quality Posts with some well organic link to to The website or whatever they instead are Trying to stuff it full of spammy links To all their clients or there are Specific organizations like we talked About Forbes and big sites which are Targeted right there are moles in there There are interns who are on the payroll Of these SEO companies there are Entirely made up persona like fake Authors who have multiple columns across Multiple websites and fake LinkedIn Profiles like really complicated like Blackhat kind of very smart though Like I like it’s quite impressive like How some of this stuff how far people go For this actually I can tell the Steyr About this because my fiance she is to Do that she’s a living building for a While and someone she built a persona It’s been a while in 1970s she built a

The Google Support Forums of all places Where a fairly innocent person had like A health and beauty blog and they got This this message he got this issue and They they posted about it like what do I Do And people were commenting and an Essential eventually john mueller came In and he said and i quote there is Absolutely no need to know follow every Link on your site it’s like that sinking Yeah However however those that are there Because of an exchange such as a product Or service for a review should have a Round though follow-on links to that Product to their sales page and any Social media profiles that are linked Because of the review so reading between The lines what was going on here Was that health and beauty sites getting Free products writing reviews about Those products and do follow it along Not know following the the links to to That website thus causing a problem Reconsideration requests submitted and Problem solve yeah I mean I don’t think It’s a big issue I do think a lot of People are gonna buy links that don’t Help anymore though I do seem like so I Guess I’ve been doing that for four Years already right yep so I guess I Want to go back to the main question to Like slowly get to the bottom of this

Which is well like first of all is guest Posting affected what should people do And then let’s talk about what I just Mentioned which is the situation of like Paid links etc like our people just Bindings that do nothing and like how How would you ever know that this is Happening like because I know a lot of People who listen just buy links and It’s a reality of the market again So what’s the plan because the thing is Like my diggity was a car like if the Site has traffic then it’s probably good And probably means that Google likes the Site so you get you think maybe your Reaction to that to be honest kind of Like a direct reaction is like no these Sites keep their traffic but the links Don’t count anymore So like you guys can actually tell if we Still like this ice or not and if we got Them and then the incentive of the site Owner is to not tell people correct and You have no way of knowing because There’s no outward change or no outward Metric that you can you can measure to To understand what’s going on here so Where that leaves us is we’re in a Landscape where you don’t know of a Guest posts from a specific site is Gonna be good or bad based on any kind Of SEO metrics or there’s no tool which Can tell you this so what does that Leave us with well how how can we

Determine whether a site is good or bad Well I guess that’s like I mean first of All you can’t exactly you’re you’re you Can have an educated guess based on Their kind of editorial standards site Age site design site size a whole host Of factors about whether it just seems Like a legitimate entity or kind of fly By fly-by-night organization Who else is linking to these kinds of Things but it’s it’s very difficult to Know for sure but what that does that Uncertainty is that it will push people Towards going or push people to stop Going for guest posts on maybe Questionable sites and only go for like The super high-end stuff which is what Google originally considers guest Posting not these you know five-dollar Sponsored post it’s a that’s they call I Think it just increases the prices of Ranking when you buy links from links as Well in general like it’s just in General like you can assume there’s Gonna be like a percentage of junk in There like I don’t know like twenty Percent thirty percent five percent I’ve no idea but what I know is like Some sites will be affected and you’ll Be paying for nothing so like to get the Same result so just need to buy more and I’ve already decided to prove that more Than that drug percentage will just go Higher you know sure and just to be

Clear this is not something that’s gonna Happen this has already been happening For many yeah yeah so it’s it’s also Worth saying you know if you have been Buying links which we don’t recommend Just to reiterate if you have been Buying links from from other other sites And it’s been working for you then you Must at least up until this point have Been doing something right at least and The algorithm up until this point so Even in that case it’s not necessarily a It’s almost a situation where you need To change everything tomorrow but I Think as a best practice going forward Over the medium to long term it’s Probably you’re gonna have better Results by going less for the low end More for the high end in future yeah I Think also when you reach out to the Side and they just send you their prices Right away like the changes are probably Pretty high like I mean I don’t even Know they’re pretty they’re higher than A side that would not do that because Like they might just view 3% chance I Have no idea how many sites are affected So I’m trying to be careful with my Words I’m trying to not do the same as What happens he’s article they would Probably be higher this is also good Timing to re-emphasize the the bad Neighborhood effect so getting links From from sites who are doing dodgy

Stuff or selling Who are or even something which is not Really that far on the da genus spectrum But like do following a link after Getting a free product from from the Owner that is increasingly going to be Risky you’re not effective but you got To ask yourself like how how many sites Have this penalty and continue to sell Guest post knowingly to link sellers and Link sellers have a limited pool because There are a limited number of sites out There who who sell these things right Who sell guest post on their sites so I Feel like there’s this pool which isn’t Really growing that much it’s just like The amount of people effect infected by The this outbound link penalties Probably going to increase over time Just through the bad neighborhood effect So I feel like there’s a whole analogy With the corner virus right now the same Interesting but okay so how do people Not get caught by this kind of News in the future so the question a Better question to ask is like how do You apply critical sense to SEO you Should do politics in the future you Take my question hey just like check no That’s a bad question let me just ask Myself the question that you should ask Yeah anyway I think it all comes back to Trying to be as objective in scientific As possible so look at the original
